My journey
From ₹100 of margin money and a few hard lessons in trading to a basket I invest in, run by rules.
- 2019₹100 to start
I moved ₹100 from my bank account into a trading account as margin.
- First tradesWins that didn't stick
A few trades went my way, but with such a small account, brokerage and charges had eaten the profit by the end of the day.
- ThenDoubling down
I added saved pocket money, leaned harder on margin and tried more trades.
- The lessonTrading wasn't for me
Unless I traded full-time, probably across several instruments, I wasn't going to succeed at it.
- The switchI started investing
The idea had always been to invest, and investing went well for me. Over the years the money I put in grew from hundreds to tens of thousands.
- Since Sep 2024A basket, run by rules
Today I invest through the basket on this page: a rules-based screen with light adjustments, rebalanced every quarter.
How it's built
- ScopeOne investment basket
This is not the owner's entire portfolio.
- PerformanceAccount chart
Normalized source-reported account performance, not model basket returns or cash profit.
- WeightingCurrent market-value weights
Current market-value allocation, which can drift from target weights.
- RebalancingSource history
Basket changes are shown below; these are not account trade confirmations.
The catch: tax and charges
The chart follows the account as Starfolio reports it. It doesn't show the tax due on each rebalance, and it isn't verified whether brokerage and DP charges are included. Running a basket like this yourself costs more than a mutual fund would:
- Short-term capital gains tax. Every rebalance sells stocks that were often bought only months earlier, so most profitable exits are taxed as short-term gains in that year.
- DP and transaction charges. Each stock sold from the demat account carries a DP charge, and every trade pays STT, exchange fees, GST and stamp duty.
- Concentration. Five stocks can swing much harder than a diversified fund.
A mutual fund does its rebalancing inside the fund, so you pay tax only when you redeem and no per-trade charges in your account. Which one fits you is your call. Compare the two approaches
